Regional Homemaker Program
The Regional Homemaker program is accessible only by Edmonton and Area Child & Family Services, Region 6.
Major Objectives
The major objectives of the program are:
- to maintain normal household family functioning while under time limited increased stress;
- to teach, model, and provide household management skills;
- to increase the capacity of a family to protect vulnerable members such as children who are disabled;
- to encourage parents to assume as much parental responsibility as possible;
- to assist families to follow through with any recommendations regarding health or hygiene issues; and
- to assist families to connect with and access community resources.
Referral & Intake Process
In our Community Support Programs, we view the role of taking intakes as a supervisory level activity for a variety of reasons. Knowing the staff, their expertise and their experience are very much important pieces when assigning cases.
Case Examples
Where Homemaker Services have been utilized:
- Mother suffers from severe depression and struggles with maintaining the condition of the home.
- Family requires teaching and hands-on support with maintaining the condition of the home.
- Caregiver with a mental illness, overwhelmed with organizing and unpacking belongings.
- Caregiver underwent medical treatments and surgery and is temporarily unable to care for their children.
- Family with multiple stressors requires assistance with house cleaning in order to return state of the home to a manageable condition.
Program Evaluation
At The Family Centre we attempt to monitor and evaluate our programs in a number of ways:
- By looking at the service from the families’ perspective.
- By looking at the service from the frontline worker’s perspective.
- By looking at the service from the Authority’s perspective.
